The road runs from Vila Nova de Gaia to Vila Nova de Foz Côa, passing through Cinfães do Douro, Resende, Peso da Régua, Pinhão and São João da Pesqueira, covering some 226.3 km.
The road's fame grew even more when, in 2015, the stretch linking Peso da Régua to Pinhão, entirely accompanied by the River Douro and the meandering vineyards of the region, was considered the best stretch of road in the world to drive.
