International Douro Natural Park

International Douro Natural Park
Douro region | 19 July, 2019

The International Douro Natural Park covers 122 kilometers along the border of the Douro River and its tributary, the Águeda River.

DO YOU ALREADY KNOW THE NATURAL PARK BETWEEN PORTUGAL AND SPAIN?

The International Douro Natural Park covers 122 kilometers along the border of the Douro River and its tributary, the Águeda River.

It integrates the municipalities of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro.

This border section separates Portugal from Spain.

There are several canyons that are excavated between the Douro and Águeda rivers, all of which are extremely deep, reaching over 200 meters.

There are 5 dams along the Douro river section, while the Águeda river flows freely.

The steep cliffs are of great value in terms of fauna, and are home to several bird nests that surround the banks. The flora is also very rich in this area.

There is a low population density, and the main economic activities are agriculture and livestock.

Mirandês is spoken in this area, the second official language of Portugal since 1999.

On the Spanish side, the park is called Arribes del Duero Natural Park, and helps to complement the protection and conservation of nature in this border area.

SAIL TO THE FRONTIER WITH OUR COMPANY!

To get to know this treasure better between countries, we recommend that you take the Cruise from Régua to Barca d’Alva.

Located on the left bank of the Douro River, Barca d’Alva offers magnificent natural landscapes and is also a mandatory stop due to the panoramas that the Almond Blossoms offer.

This tour through Douro to Barca d’Alva takes you across three dams located along the Douro river section, and you will still be able to admire the landscapes as you pass through the village of Pinhão and the village of Pocinho.

This is one of our most complete programs, including breakfast, lunch and snacks on board. There are countless reasons to venture into this experience, which allows you to get to know the Douro Natural Park.
