The region of Tua
Douro region | 14 August, 2019

The Tua Valley is another one of the treasures of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro. Get to know more about this region and what is part of it.

THE TUA REGION AND ITS VALLEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE TREASURES OF THE ALTO DOURO VINHATEIRO

In the Alto Douro Wine Region is the Tua region.

This territory of the Tua Valley starts in Pinhão and continues to its limit in Carrazeda de Ansiães.

Along this route it is possible to observe a magnificent geography designed by the river and the landscapes that are contemplated.

REGIONAL NATURAL PARK OF THE TUA VALLEY

It was created on September 24, 2013. With an area of 25,000 hectares, this park is located between the districts of Vila Real and Bragança, covering the municipalities of Alijó, Murça, Vila Flor, Carrazeda de Ansiães and Mirandela.

The Tua Valley Regional Natural Park has a diverse landscape marked by mountains, plateaus and embedded valleys, namely those of the Douro, Tua and Tinhela rivers.

This landscape is full of natural and heritage values that must be maintained and valued.

THE LINE OF TUA

Known as one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world, it is worth taking a tour in the region.

Completed in 1880, the Tua Line was built in the middle of the craggy rocks.

Along the way you can observe the Portuguese industrial archeology, with several iron bridges and equipment.

One of the best programs to get to know this region better is the Historic Train program.

This train is a charismatic steam locomotive, with five historic carriages, which transports tourists from Pinhão to Tua, and from Tua to Régua.

A total awakening of the senses, on a unique journey into the past.

Another program you can do is a short cruise between Pinhão and Tua.

It is a 2-hour trip on a Rabelo boat, where you can also taste a glass of Port Wine or Moscatel Wine on board.

The special part of this cruise is that it takes you along a section of the river that is not visible from the national roads.

You can thus have an exclusive tour and see hidden landscapes in paradise.

FOZ TUA DAM

Also known as the Tua dam, it is a Portuguese dam intended for the hydroelectric use of the Tua River.

It is one of the most controversial dams in Portuguese history, as its reservoir forced the closure and submersion of the first 16 kilometers of the Tua railway line.

The construction of the dam prompted protests from various environmental organizations and civic movements in the region.

However, none of Portugal's parties opposed its construction, and it was eventually built in 2017.
